Ma Weihua Profile

a Ma Weihua became CEO of China Merchants Bank, a commercial bank based in Shenzhen, in 1999 and bank president in 2004.

He was born in 1949 in Jinzhou, in the northeastern province of Liaoning. After studying economics at Jilin University in 1978, Ma earned his PhD at the Southwest University of Finance and Economics and received an honorary doctorate from the University of Southern California.

Ma worked in government in Liaoning until the mid-1980s, when he moved to Anhui, in eastern China, to work in the office of the Communist Party of China's provincial committee. In 1988, he assumed the post of General Office deputy director at the People's Bank of China in 1988, and was made the bank's deputy bureau chief of funds planning in 1992.

In 1992, Ma became president of the Hainan Province branch of the People's Bank of China and bureau chief of the State Administration of Foreign Exchange. He worked in these positions until  moving to China Merchants Bank.
