Police to Stop Using Camps This Year, Politburo Member Says

(Beijing) – The notorious practice of police sending people to labor camps without a trial will be halted this year, a move that critics lauded.

Meng Jianzhu, secretary of the Central Politics and Law Commission, said at a top conference on January 7 that the Communist Party's Central Committee would submit the decision to cease using the camps to the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) this spring.
