Chinese opera singers – where "Chinese" modifies "singers" rather than "opera" – are not the rarities they once were. Lyric tenor Shi Yijie specializes in Rossini and Donizetti and sings in major opera houses from Venice and Naples in Italy to Santiago in Chile. Soprano He Hui sings at the Metropolitan and Chicago Lyric Operas, in Vienna, Berlin and the Arena of her adopted home town of Verona. Opera-goers anywhere in the world are also likely to have heard sopranos Zhang Liping, Fang Ying, Huang Ying, Yu Guanqun or bass-baritone Shengyang.
