Supreme Court Procedure Reduces Death Sentences by 60%
China executes 'a few thousand' criminals last year after putting to death more than 10,000 in 2006
(Beijing) — China's criminal-execution tally fell about 60 percent to "a few thousand" last year from more than 10,000 a decade earlier, according to academics who spoke at a legal forum Sunday.
Spearheading the reduction was a 2006 decision by the Supreme People's Court that introduced a system through which the supreme court reviews capital-punishment sentences before executions can take place.
