Delivering a care package to someone behind bars is so 2018.
Friends and families of criminals can now simply transfer money to the official Alipay account of Beijing Jails to pay for relatives’ extra items and services, the mobile payment giant confirmed Monday.
Senders simply log in to Alipay's “City Service” section, select “Beijing Jails,” and then specify their recipient to complete the transfer. The service has yet to announce any transaction ceilings.
In China, jails cover most of criminals’ expenses, but in some circumstances allow them to purchase extra items and services upon approval.
This is Alipay's latest public-service function. The platform already allows users to pay utilities, book medical appointments, check for updates on their social insurance status, and collect digital divorce certificates.
