Weekend Long Read: China Still Needs Supply-Side Structural Reform, but Needs to Get It Right

Supply-side structural reform (供给侧结构性改革), a term that appears frequently in important policy documents, has been guiding the Chinese government’s economic work for the past six years. The reform is intended to take into account the need to sustain both short-term growth and long-term momentum.

But it’s been difficult for the “invisible hand of the market” to play a decisive role in the reform and as a result, the policy has yet to have the impact that was originally expected.
