Dying for a Job: Laboring at a Foxconn Plant
Shenzhen – Twice a day, at 7 a.m. and 9 p.m., about 200,000 shift workers in matching uniforms trudge across the sprawling campus at a Foxconn Group electronics plant.
Most are 18- and 19-year-olds. They shuffle en masse between assembly lines and company dormitories where they sleep. They walk in utter silence; there's nothing to talk about. Working hours are spent performing monotonous tasks, free time is only for sleeping or listlessly hanging out in rooms.
