Caixin Survey:Manufacturers Work to Retain Workers
Companies in China are quickly adapting to a new industrial landscape with the onset of accelerated wage growth through strategies that range from the improvement of labor conditions to the increasing use of automation in labor-intensive processes.
Wage growth is not enough for workers now, as many of them also grumble about living conditions and after-work activities. This is spurring many industries to improve these areas, a trend that has been observed in most enterprises located in coastal Jiangsu and Guangdong Provinces. Sampled enterprises in Hubei Province are also putting more emphasis on workers' comfort and standard of living. Textile industries, which have a relatively high proportion of migrant workers, must improve living conditions for workers outside of working hours, and between 55 and 61 percent of sampled enterprises are taking such steps. Foreign enterprises, with higher profitability ratios, are often more willing to strive toward improvement in these areas.
