Dairy Standards Stir Uproar Over Safety

(Beijing) – Ongoing criticism over standards for dairy products issued in June has prompted the dairy producers to allay concerns over a decline in food safety through the drafting of industry requirements.
The state-run People's Daily reported on November 28 that dairy producers are in the process of drafting a stricter industry standard.
The regulations replace a 1986 law issued by the Ministry of Agriculture which measured four grades of bacteria clusters at 500,000 units per milliliter, 1 million units per milliliter, 2 million units per milliliter and 4 million units per milliliter. The new standard will abandon the classification and measure for only one grade of bacteria clusters at 2 million units per milliliter.
