Ten Thousand Kinds of Melancholy

"Ten Thousand Kinds of Melancholy," was originally published in Taiwan. Hu Lancheng depicts a series of episodes of his final years in Tokyo, to which he retreated after serving in the Japanese Empire's puppet Chinese government during World War II. Here, Hu writes about his daily life, his encounters with young people in Japan, and bidding farewell to friends young and old. The collection has been called "a sequel to Hu's missing autobiography," from which readers can dig out layers of truth and meaning from Hu's musings on mundane, everyday issues.
