In late July, the weather in Belém, the capital of Pará state in northern Brazil and a city in the Amazon forest region, is hot and humid. Mango trees, transplanted here from Europe during the mid-19th century Brazilian rubber boom, still provide shade from the tropical heat on the streets of Belém. Contrary to popular perceptions of the Amazon rainforest, Belém's streets are bustling with people and filled with urban landscapes.
At that time, Belem was awaiting the heads and representatives of several "Amazon nations." On August 8, after a 14-year hiatus, the first Amazon Summit was held in Belem; this summit is also seen as a warm-up event for the 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. By the end of 2025, Belem will host COP30.
