He is an elected Fellow of American Institute of Medicine and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) and a Fellow of Royal Society Chemistry (RSC). He also holds an Honorary Doctor of Science Degree from the University of Alberta. He has published over 400 research papers and led the research and compilation of “Synthetic Biology Roadmap 2030” (from China’s perspective). In addition, Prof. Zhang acts as the coordinator of the expert group for China’s Synthetic Biology Rsearch Program. He also serves as the Vice President of Chinese Society of Biotechnology, Chair of the Division of Synthetic Biology, a Member of the Organizing Committee of the World Congress on Biosensors, and a Founding Co-chair of the Division of Nanobiotechnology/Biosensors/Biochips, Asian Federation of Biotechnology (AFOB).
担任中国国家合成生物学重点专项专家组长，中国生物工程学会副理事长、合成生物学分会主任，生物传感/生物芯片/纳米生物技术分会创会主任、荣誉主任，亚洲生物技术协会（AFOB）顾问、纳米生物技术/生物传感/生物芯片分会共同创会长，世界生物传感学术大会常务组委会委员。
