( Magazine) Subdued talk about a pending merger for two of China's largest airlines grew louder late last year, when a source told that industry veteran Liu Shaoyong, chairman of China Southern Airlines Ltd. and former general manager of its parent China Southern Airlines Group, had been appointed chief of China Eastern Airlines.

The merger of China Eastern and Shanghai Airlines was officially announced six months later.
