Editorial Independence

Caixin Global is the English-language platform of Caixin Media, one of China's most respected independent news organizations, with a focus on China business, finance, and economic affairs. Our editorial decisions — including story selection, sourcing, framing, and publication — are made solely by our editors and reporters, free from influence by advertisers, commercial partners, or any government body.

Caixin organizes and co-hosts conferences and forums, including the Asia New Vision Forum and the Caixin Global Summit, sometimes in partnership with government agencies or corporate sponsors. These commercial and institutional partnerships operate entirely separately from our newsroom. They have no influence over our editorial decisions, story selection, or coverage. Where a news article references a Caixin-organized event or a commercial partner, we disclose that relationship clearly within the article. Event-related publications — including agendas, post-event recaps, and white papers — are produced outside the newsroom and are clearly labeled as not reflecting Caixin Global's editorial views.

Reporting Standards

We are committed to accuracy, fairness, and transparency. For significant or contentious claims, we seek corroboration from documentary evidence or at least two independent sources whenever possible. For routine facts, we rely on authoritative primary sources; where we rely on a single source, we clearly note this in the article. We seek on-the-record comment from all parties named in our reporting and provide reasonable time for response before publication.

Translation Standards

Many Caixin Global articles are translated or adapted from Caixin Media's Chinese-language reporting. We credit the original source and indicate when quotes have been translated by Caixin. Translations prioritize accuracy and fidelity to the original meaning; where wording is adjusted for clarity, the substance of the original is preserved. Translation errors are corrected promptly and disclosed in the corrections note, following the same standards as factual corrections.

Anonymous Sources

We use anonymous sources only when the information is of significant public interest and cannot be obtained through on-the-record means. We require editors to know the identity of all anonymous sources and to assess the reliability of their claims. We do not grant anonymity for personal attacks, marketing purposes, or to help any party avoid accountability. We distinguish between on-the-record, background, and deep background, and we make these terms clear to sources before any conversation begins.

Use of AI and Automation

We use AI tools to assist with tasks including translation, research, summarization, and production workflows. No AI-generated text, images, audio, or video is published without human editorial review and verification. We do not use AI to fabricate quotes, events, or sources. Where AI has materially assisted in the creation of published content — such as translation or image generation — we disclose this to readers. All facts derived through AI tools must be independently verified against reliable primary sources before publication.

Conflicts of Interest

Caixin Global journalists are required to disclose any personal, familial, or financial interests that could create a conflict with their reporting. This includes investments held by immediate family members, paid speaking engagements, travel or hospitality received from external parties, advisory or board roles, and gifts of more than a nominal value. Staff are prohibited from covering companies, institutions, or individuals in which they or their immediate family hold a financial interest. Staff covering subjects connected to Caixin's own commercial lines — including events, data products, and research services — must obtain prior editorial approval and disclose the relationship within the article. Acceptance of travel or hospitality that could reasonably be perceived to influence coverage is prohibited.

All sponsored or branded content is clearly labeled as such and is produced separately from our editorial team. Sponsored content does not reflect the editorial views of Caixin Global.

Data Journalism and Methodology

For data-driven stories, we disclose our data sources, analytical methods, and material limitations. Where we use Caixin's proprietary datasets or models, we disclose that relationship. If datasets are updated or corrected after publication, we note the changes and their potential effect on the story's conclusions.

Visual and Audio Standards

Images, video, and audio published by Caixin Global must not be altered beyond routine technical adjustments — such as cropping or tonal correction — that do not mislead. AI-generated or composited visuals are labeled as such. When using handout materials, pool photographs, or agency content, we credit the source clearly.

Pre-publication Review and Quote Approval

We do not share full article drafts with sources prior to publication. We may read back specific quotes or technical passages to a source solely for the purpose of verifying factual accuracy. We do not grant quote approval or allow sources to alter the substance of their statements after the fact.

Social Media

Caixin Global journalists represent the organization in their public conduct, including on social media. Staff should avoid partisan advocacy, personal attacks, and behavior that could create a conflict of interest or compromise their ability to report fairly. Information gathered through social media platforms is subject to the same verification standards as any other source.

Corrections and Updates

When we make an error, we correct it promptly and transparently. Minor factual updates are time-stamped within the article. Significant corrections carry a prominent note at the top of the article detailing what was changed and when; these are also noted in our daily newsletter and, where appropriate, on our social media channels. In rare cases where an article must be retracted in full, we preserve a public note explaining the reason for the retraction. We aim to respond to correction requests within 48 hours on weekdays. Legal, Safety, and Source Protection

We protect the identity of confidential sources and use secure communication channels where appropriate. We honor lawful embargoes and established ground rules — such as the Chatham House Rule — agreed in advance with event organizers, but we do not accept constraints that unreasonably limit reporting in the public interest. Our reporting complies with applicable laws across the jurisdictions in which we operate.

Opinion and Analysis

Caixin Global clearly distinguishes between news reporting, analysis, and opinion. Columns and op-eds represent the views of their authors and do not reflect the editorial position of Caixin Global.
