(Caixin Online) Stern Hu looked utterly exhausted on the defendant's stand as a Shanghai judge asked whether he would respond to a state prosecutor's allegations of bribery.

"No objection," Hu coldly replied.

That brief exchange March 22 in Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People's Court marked the beginning of a three-day trial for Hu, then-chief representative in China for Anglo-Australian mining giant Rio Tinto, and three, lower-rung company executives – Wang Yong, Ge Minjian and Liu Changkui.
