One day in March, China Mobile executive Li Xiangdong sat down in a Chengdu office with a visitor from the central government's National Audit Office. The next day, he was gone.

Li, head of the company's mobile phone music service, apparently jumped aboard an early-morning flight to Shenzhen and later fled abroad. One source said he vanished with a large sum of money.
