The creator of some of China's most popular TV variety shows is now on the cutting edge of a campaign to restructure the nation's broadcasting business.

Hunan Broadcasting System (HBS) decided in January to separate its station and administrative operations, while also dividing production and broadcast functions. The ultimate goal, part of a nationwide industry effort, is "comprehensive separation" leading to independent public listings for each entity.
