Yellow River Reportage Lands Writer in Jail

(Beijing) - Police from the Shaanxi Province city of Weinan arrested author and former prosecutor Xie Chaoping on August 19 after traveling to his home in Beijing, seizing personal papers and charging him with "illegal business activities" for writing a book.

At last word Xie, 55, was being held at a detention center in Weinan.

Weinan officials have yet to say whether his book The Great Relocation contained any inaccuracies. But officials say the book failed to receive approval from media regulators before it was published as an insert to a regional literary magazine called Sparkle earlier this year.
