Anything Can Be DIY

For the uninitiated, China is a country replete with examples of DIY action. Many of the changes occurring in society today have come from decentralized, autonomous action. The social workings of the internet can offer a close approximation to how these fragmented dynamics take hold and produce concrete outcomes.

Every year, the legislative meetings – the National People's Congress and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Congress – point to indications that the government is furthering the rule of law. When I see exceptional dramas on channels like Hunan Satellite TV, I've often wondered if it would be possible to create a show that could accurately depict a society where rule of law exists. I think it would attract high ratings. And if it isn't possible to live in a society governed by an agreement on the rules, then perhaps we can at least watch it being simulated here.
