(Beijing) -- Despite Unilever's assent to plunk down a 2-million-yuan fine to the Chinese government on charges of price manipulation, the incident has largely been seen as a hiccup in China's market development.
The National Development & Reform Commission (NDRC) imposed the penalty on May 6, singling Unilever out for its talk to the media about potential price hikes that sparked panic buying of shampoo and detergent in some cities late March.
