On October 8, 1735, Emperor Yongzhong was laid to rest in the third reign of the Qing Dynasty, shortly after uniting the country. But in death, his imperial will lived on. Court documents failed to specify the cause of death and shortly after, falsehoods began to spread. What followed for the descendents of an intellectual was only the beginning of a virulent persecution that lasted for generations.
