Forced Demolitions Getting Creative

In 2011, Chinese officials announced they were stopping forced demolitions once and for all, by outlawing the use of violence, intimidation and other illegal tactics during property seizures. The new law came after a slew of homeowner suicides, threatened self-immolations and stand-offs between residents and police sparked public outcry over local government power.
