Wukan Protest Leader Appointed To Government

In a sign of progress for the Wukan villagers who staged massive protests over land grabs,detentions and rigged elections last fall, Guangdong authorities have appointed protest leader Lin Zulian to the post of village secretary.

Wukan residents said the move was a positive step, but they said government officials have yet to make good on many of the concessions offered last December to end the protests.
