For once, law professor Zhang Qianfan had looked forward to traveling abroad for a conference in his field of expertise last year.

The destination was Nepal, one of the few countries in the world that lets a Chinese visitor obtain a visa after landing at an airport and, much to any foreign traveler's relief, skip the hassle of an embassy visa application.
