Attempting to cap a recent litany of food safety scandals, the central government said July 3 it will set a goal post of three years to reduce food safety incidents and five years to improve overall food quality.
However, a leading legal expert argues that the source of food safety problems stems from the same type of regulatory powers which the government seeks to increase. By keeping regulators at the top of the food chain, food quality screenings will remain the prey of already-corrupt officials.
