Beijing Closes Four Migrant Children Schools

(Beijing) – Authorities in Beijing shuttered four schools serving thousands of primary school children in recent months, citing a lack of permits.

The makeshift schools were built for the children of migrant workers who, restricted by the residence permit system, are not eligible to attend the municipality's public schools.

Two such schools were shuttered on July 16, both located in central Beijing's Chaoyang District. On that day, local officials asked parents of students to sign a school transfer form to facilities approved by municipal authorities. Authorities dispatched three police cars and one ambulance to maintain order.
