Hometown Boy

The first documentary to profile the meteoric rise of contemporary Chinese artist Liu Xiaodong, Hometown Boy traces the subjects of Liu's canvas. The film, eponymously named after a 2010 exhibition by Liu at the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, returns to Liu's hometown which he left some 30 years ago. In Jincheng, Liaoning Province, the artist is confronted with the lives of family and friends which churned through the decades in the same village, ultimately shaped by entirely separate circumstances.
