We

aTaiwanese author Luo Yijun puts a fantastical spin on a series of quasi-autobiographical vignettes in "We." Here we get a series of impressionistic sketches of pivotal, slightly surreal episodes in Luo's life: how he spent years repeating high school, his encounters with 'scum' committing acts of violence in the street, and fighting against a snake to preserve the honor of his father. More than forming a cohesive whole, the scenes are more like a series of whimsical fragments, delivering to readers the the core emotional imprint of these experiences, rather than the usual details of the experience itself.
