Unsavory Elements

aThis anthology of essays is based on experiences of 28 foreigners who have lived in China. The personal stories feature themes common to life in China's booming cities, and features fast-moving romps through a rapidly-changing changing society.  In one vignette, a woman is forced to write a confession for taking pictures at Tiananmen Square, in another, a man describes brainwashing techniques used during his jail sentence in Shanghai. With a tough affection for sometimes bleak settings, the collection of writings by several seasoned China hands connects readers to various points of view and should inspire those who are curious about the country to learn more.
