Book Review: What's Behind Media Commercialization in China

aThe first chapter in Daniela Stockmann's Media Commercialization and Authoritarian Rule in China contains an arresting set of statistics. As of 2012, the country had "1938 newspapers, 9,884 periodicals, 227 radio stations and 247 television stations." We in the West may complain about the Internet slowly killing off traditional print media, but in China under Communist Party rule, at least by this benchmark, it seems to be thriving.
