Book Review: What's Behind Media Commercialization in China
The
first chapter in Daniela Stockmann's Media Commercialization and Authoritarian
Rule in China contains an arresting set of statistics. As of 2012, the country
had "1938 newspapers, 9,884 periodicals, 227 radio stations and 247 television
stations." We in the West may complain about the Internet slowly killing off
traditional print media, but in China under Communist Party rule, at least by
this benchmark, it seems to be thriving.
