Closer Look: A Railroad Corruption Trial Raises More Questions than Answers

(Beijing) – The country's former top railroad engineer, Zhang Shuguang, stood trial on September 10 in the capital's No. 2 Intermediate People's Court.
Zhang's case not only revealed corruption in the highly monopolized railroad industry, but also shed light on how he spent more than 20 million yuan trying to obtain a fellowship in the China Academy of Sciences (CAS), the country's top natural sciences academy. Despite the princely sum he spent, Zhang fell just short of joining the country's top natural sciences academy.
