Jinan Court Gives Bo Xilai Life in Prison

(Beijing) – Bo Xilai, the former Politburo member and Communist Party boss of Chongqing, was sentenced to life in prison for embezzlement, bribery and abuse of power on September 22. He was also deprived of political rights for life and had assets confiscated.

A judge in the Jinan Intermediate People's Court in the eastern province of Shandong said Bo was guilty of accepting bribes worth 20.44 million yuan and embezzling 5 million yuan. A charge linked to allegations that air tickets worth 1.34 million yuan for Bo's wife and son were illegally reimbursed by businessman Xu Ming was not accepted by court.

The court's decisions were published on its account on Sina Weibo, the country's version of Twitter.

Bo received life in prison for bribery, 15 years in jail for embezzlement and seven years for abuse of power. Bo is to have assets worth 20.44 million yuan confiscated. Another 5 million yuan of that will be returned to the government of Dalian, in the northeastern province of Liaoning. A villa Bo owns in France will also be confiscated, the court said.

A photo on the court's weibo account showed Bo in handcuffs being led out of the court after the verdict was handed down. The court said Bo has 10 day to appeal.
