Cabinet Pledges Tax Change to Cut Coal Reliance


(Beijing) – The State Council recently vowed to change a tax on coal, a move that indicates the leadership wants reduce reliance on the source of energy blamed for fouling the air, especially in northern China.

The cabinet unveiled a document titled an Opinion to Promote the Stable Operation of the Coal Industry on November 28. It says the government will speed up a shift in the coal tax from one focused on volume to one based on value.
