When I was still young and just starting to publish, I felt surprised and anxious that I was identified by many magazine comments as a "provocative" figure. At the time, the atmosphere of the Cultural Revolution still lingered and courting controversy with my writings on love and sexuality was not looked upon fondly. Any commentary on the wrong side of the debate could invite scathing condemnation. The repercussions of the Cultural Revolution's rhetoric lasted decades after, and a desire to enforce authoritarian mindsets was still widespread at the time.
