14 December 2013 — Anyone who has been in East Asia for any length of time will surely have come across "expat fiction"—that is, novels by foreigners with expat protagonists. The World of Suzy Wong is a sort of archetype. While all-too-many pander to stereotype and aren't very taxing intellectually, these novels aren't uniformly pedestrian: like include books by James Clavell, Janice Lee and Martin Booth as well certain works, classics even, by Paul Theroux, Shirley Hazzard and Somerset Maugham.
