The Logic of the Left in China
![]() |
Hong Kong-born author John Chan moved to Beijing 10 years ago, becoming a
poignant observer of life in China. He published two highly-acclaimed novels,
Golden Age and Bare Life but in many ways is also known for introducing a
fresh mode of engagement on the concept of the left to the mainland
literary scene.
In a recent interview, he described how his journey
to becoming a self-defined leftist began as a 20-year-old student in Hong Kong.
However in the mainland, Chan is not viewed as a leftist.
