The Logic of the Left in China


Hong Kong-born author John Chan moved to Beijing 10 years ago, becoming a poignant observer of life in China. He published two highly-acclaimed novels, Golden Age and Bare Life but in many ways is also known for introducing a  fresh mode of engagement on the concept of the left to  the mainland literary scene.
 
In a recent interview, he described how his journey to becoming a self-defined leftist began as a 20-year-old student in Hong Kong. However in the mainland, Chan is not viewed as a leftist.
