Mother Whose Second Baby Arrived Prematurely Fights Fine

(Taizhou, Zhejiang) – A mother in the eastern province of Zhejiang who prematurely gave birth to a second child on December 28 – the day the country's legislature eased the one-child policy – has convinced a court to hear her lawsuit arguing she should not be hit with a hefty fine.

The ruling Communist Party said on November 12 that it would ease the country's one-child policy, allowing couples in which either parent is an only child to have a second baby. Then the next month the National People's Congress announced a new policy backing the decision.
