Views: A Dog Fight Erupts in Southern China

A dog meat festival on the June 21 in the city of Yulin, in the southern region of Guangxi, has become controversial. Residents of the city celebrate the summer solstice, the day of the year with the longest period of sunlight, by eating dog meat and a fruit called lychee and drinking grain alcohol. Eating dogs is legal in China, a country with no animal cruelty laws. Dog meat is also a traditional dish in parts of northeastern China and elsewhere in the south.
