Gunfire Can Be Heard at Iraq Building Site, Chinese Worker Says

(Beijing) – Gunshots can be heard at a building site in northern Iraq where Chinese workers are waiting to be rescued, one worker says, as a small group flees by helicopter and car.

A worker who was among those remaining at the site in Samarra told Caixin by phone about 2 p.m. on June 26 that the situation was tense.

"Wherever I look on the site people are anxious and worried," he said. "The site is under armed protection and safe so far, but there is fighting outside. We can hear gunshots all the time and everyone is in a panic."
