Beloved Strangers
Maria Chaudhuri's debut, Beloved Strangers, is a memoir perhaps better read as a novel, so as not to be distracted from the fine writing and storytelling by doubts about whether her childhood in Bangladesh was entirely as she tells the tale. And she does tell it as a tale, complete with character development, plotting and the occasional element of magic realism.
