Chinese Tycoons, Stars Take up Ice Bucket Challenge for ALS

(Beijing) – A chilly social media challenge that started in the United States as a way to raise money for a deadly disease that attacks nerve cells has reached China, perhaps giving a boost to raising awareness for rare diseases in the developing country.

On August 18, Lei Jun, founder of smartphone maker Xiaomi Inc., became the first person in China to take the challenge, in which people either donate US$ 100 to an amyotrophic lateral sclerosis charity (ALS) or dump a bucket of ice-cube filled water over their head.
