There is perhaps no railway as tied to the land it crosses as the Trans-Siberian. Without the vast expanse of Siberia, it would not be the "World's Greatest Railway"—Christian Wolmar makes a good case justifying this possible case of hyperbole—and without the Trans-Siberian tying the country together, Russia might well not today be the bi-continental unitary state that it is.
