Entropic Hypnotic

Handsome is as handsome does and filmmaker Wang Bo's eye on the world of Chinese society is as clear and catching as his mesmeric gaze. "I am over there, there where I am not, a sort of shadow that gives my own visibility to myself, that enables me to see myself there where I am absent: such is the utopia of the mirror," writes Foucault in his 1967 essay titled Of Other Spaces, upon which Wang has taken inspiration for his photography series, Heteroscapes. Wang's ongoing project comes off of his combustible 2012 film China Concerto, a richly associative essay film on the spectacle of the Red Song campaign in Chongqing, and examines the city's social de-politicization in recent decades.
