Although child abuse is the premise for this novel, it is in fact a familiar narrative of the search for identity and meaning among the ruins of the past.

With stories of child abuse and female rape in India recently making local and international headlines, author and former journalist Anuradha Roy has picked a timely topic. However, she chooses to expand the subject beyond these two vulnerable groups by showing that all members of Indian society can be subject to abuse, be they male or female, rich or poor – even stray dogs.
