Aa Maratheyum Marannu Marannu Njan: And Slowly Forgetting That Tree

This novella purports to be a story of victimhood but is actually a clever treatise against the suppression of women in modern India.

On the surface, the tale is harrowing. The main character, Radhika, is raped several times and is often the object of mental torture as well. The abuse is so manifold, however, that it verges on the ridiculous. And because the author is KR Meera, writer of last year's award-winning feminist novel Araachaar (published in English as Hangwoman), these scenes are best interpreted as a polemical device rather than gratuitous violence.
