China 1945: Mao's Revolution and America's Fateful Choice

Mao Zedong, in a speech in 1949, soon after the release of the US State Department's White Paper on China, said he was puzzled by why the United States continued to aid Chiang in his fight once it recognized that the Kuomintang no longer enjoyed the popular support of the Chinese people?
The 1949 White Paper had highlighted the imminent "loss" of the country to the Communists after the defeat of the "demoralized and unpopular" government of Chiang Kai-shek.
