China Builds Legal Basis for Charitable Giving

(Beijing) – The legislature is putting the final touches on what's expected to become the nation's first charitable activities law, with the goal of bringing more order to a social movement plagued by scandal.

The proposed Charity Law, which the National People's Congress could approve soon, would set the ground rules for donation-supported, non-profit organizations whose ranks have swelled in recent years even in a legal vacuum. The nation's charities received about US$ 15 billion in 2014, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs.
