China's 'Nightingale' of Opera Zhou Xiaoyan Dies, Aged 98

"The 10,000 mile Great Wall is tens of thousands of miles long, outside this wall is our hometown … its devastation now is unbearable"
When Zhou Xiaoyan sang these lyrics in the patriotic folk song The Ballad of the Great Wall in 1937, the country was engulfed in a war with invading Japanese troops. Her concert in Wuhan, in the central province of Hubei, was part of a series of performances to urge young men and women to join the fight.
