Closer Look: Reckless Reclamation Increases Flood Threat in Wuhan

(Beijing) – The severe floods that have inundated Wuhan, the provincial capital of the central province of Hubei, has raised questions about how authorities have spent billions of dollars pledged in 2013 to fortify the city's flood prevention capacity.

The central Chinese city is one of the worst affected by floods along the Yangze River. It experienced over 560 millimeters of rainfall from June 30 to July 6, the heaviest downpour the city had seen since it began keeping meteorological records decades ago.
