In Xi’s New Era, Four Government Bodies to Bring Country Forward

By Aries Poon

In a “new era” envisioned by Communist Party chief Xi Jinping, the country will set up new bodies to promote four specific areas: the rule of law, natural resource conservation, veteran benefits, and a strong supervisory system at different levels, from local to national.

In his major policy address he delivered at the opening session of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China last Wednesday, Xi laid out plans to establish these new bodies with the following objectives:

First, a steering central committee to promote the rule of law will “improve the system of institutions through which the people run the country and develop socialist democracy.”

Second, a state-backed regulator that focuses on managing national natural resources will “speed up reform of the system for developing an ecological civilization and building a beautiful China.”

Third, a unit that focuses on improving veteran benefits will be in line with China’s commitment to “building strong armed forces and fully advancing the modernization of national defense and the military.”

And fourth, the creation of supervisory committees at the national, provincial, city and county levels will help the country exercise “strict governance over the party’s ability to govern and lead.”
